The History of the M1938 Tanker Helmet

American tank crews in World War II needed head protection that suited the cramped, jolting interior of a tank, where steel helmets were heavy and noisy. The US Army turned to Rawlings to develop a lightweight padded helmet, and the design that became known as the M1938 (or M38) tanker helmet was issued to armored crews throughout WW2. Its rounded shape resembled a football helmet of the era, and its most recognisable feature was the leather ear flap assembly, which made room for headphones inside the tank.
